International Tiger Day

The day is additionally referred to as Global Tiger Day. As we know that the population of tiger across the globe dropped sharply since the beginning of the 20th century but the good news is that now their number is on the rise. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on 28 July released All India Tiger Estimation Report-2018 on the eve of Global Tiger Day and a poster on small wild cats of India.

He told that "India is home to nearly 70% of the tiger population and it leads the world". Further, he stated that apart from tigers, India is additionally home to 30 thousand elephants, 3000 single-horned Rhinos, and over 500 lions. He also noted that having constraints of physical resources the country sustains nearly 8% of the world's eco-diversity.

In 1973, Project Tiger was started in India which was a unique plan to save tigers on the planet. Since it formative years there were 9 tiger reserves but the Tiger Project coverage has increased to 50.

But according to WWF around 3,900 wild tigers are left in the world. Since the beginning of the 20th century, over 95% of the world's tiger population is lost. It is said that across Asia, the snaring crisis poses a grave threat to wild tigers.

We can't deny the fact that tigers are the largest species of the cat family and also one of the most iconic animals on the planet. About a century ago, there may have been over 100,000 tigers that roam on the planet.

A conservational goal which is so ambitious was set up by the government of the 13 range countries to double the number of wild tigers by 2022 in the next Chinese year of the tiger.

There is a famous quote "Where tigers thrive, it is a sign that the ecosystem is healthy"

Etiquette on WhatsApp Groups

Etiquette on WhatsApp Groups

WhatsApp has revolutionized the way we communicate. The ability to convey messages instantly to the class through the Class Group is very convenient to all.

Listed below are my thoughts on the way people post things on WhatsApp. I felt we need to follow some etiquette to put WhatsApp to better use. These are meant mainly for the Class Groups we maintain in our Vidyalaya to connect with our classes during this lockdown.

Post things that are relevant to the group

Keep the intended purpose of the group. The Class Groups are meant for keeping you up-to-date of the school news, announcement and alerts related to scholastic and c-scholastic activities and programmes of the school. Do not post or forward messages that are not relevant to the class.

Also do not post some unimportant message just below an important message posted by someone.

No personal messages

Avoid personal conversation in a group. If you would like to chat with a friend, do it privately.

Acknowledgement and Thank you's from all not required

If the teacher has posted an instruction or a classwork, no need for everyone to post "Ok, Madam", "I will do it, sir" and things like that. If you have understood the message, follow it. If you need any clarification, post a question.

If you have attended an online test or uploaded an assignment to the Google Classroom, your teacher will be able to see that. No need to say "I have completed the test" and the like.

Similarly, no need for everyone to post "Thank You" ntoes, if someone has posted a useful message.

Congratulations/Birthday Wishes/Condolence Messages

It is always good to wish someone on their birthday or congratulate them for any achievements. Joining someone in their grief and offering condolence is also very much required. A few messages of this nature on the group is ok, but everyone is not supposed to post that in a group.

The best way to do this is to send a private message to the person concerned. If you want everyone in the group to know that you have done so, no doubt the group is the best place for that.

Urgent matters, make a call

You cannot expect the other person to check WhatsApp messages immediately. You are aware of the information explosion on your WhatsApp. So if you need a response immediately better make a call.

Here are a few things more...

  • Avoid lengthy messages. Be precise and short with the messages.
  • It is better to post the stories or notes on your Google Drive and provide a link to it that posting the entire content.
  • When you are posting a video or image, you may add a short description of what it is to help others to decide whether to download and see it (who has got the time to do all these when we are simply forwarding it as received)

Menstrual Hygiene Drive at KVOFD by Million Daughters Foundation

On 6th May, 2023, Million Daughters Foundation organised an education drive on menstrual health management at KVOFD where the female students were informed on  topics like menstruation, menstrual health and menstrual hygiene.

In many parts of our country, menstruation is still considered a taboo. It is not openly talked about and certainly not seen as a human rights issue. At Million Daughters Foundation, we aim to change the fabric of the society in such a manner that menstruation is no longer viewed with negative connotations and is considered a women’s health issue. At KVOFD, with the permission of the principal, Mr. Sunil Dutt, and the help of the staff members like Ms. Zainab Khan, Mrs. Shilpika Singh and Ms. Manvi Tamta, the Foundation was able to conduct an awareness drive.

This drive was spearheaded by a long time volunteer of the Foundation, Zainab Khan, who works in the school as a special educator, and was managed by our team member Anees Fatima. The drive was conducted in two phases where the first involved the female students of class VII and class VIII. The second drive involved the female students of class V and class VI.

As most of the girls had reached puberty and started menstruating, the first drive focussed on various aspects of menstruation. Our team debunked the myths associated with menstruation and gave the students a list of what to do and what not to do while menstruating. The girls were also made aware of the exercises that they can do and food that they can, should and should not consume while menstruating. During the drive, the girls were also informed about the different ways to maintain menstrual hygiene. The drive ended with an open floor where the students were encouraged to ask questions and share their views. Many students cleared their doubts by asking questions and some discussed their problems vis-à-vis menstruation.

The second drive, owing to the age of the recipients, was more focussed on making the young girls familiar with the process of menstruation as almost all of them have yet to start menstruating. The session was about preparing these girls for what’s to come in the future and make them understand that menstruation is a biological process, can be managed well and is not something to be afraid of.

Less than 13% of Indian women and girls who menstruate have access to period products which are often deemed as unnecessary. In the absence of safe period products, many have to resort of unsafe options like coconut husks, rags and cloth, leading to health issues in many. As the cost of living rises in the country, many families are not able to afford the period products. Several young girls drop out of school when they reach puberty as they don’t have the means to manage their periods. To address this, the Foundation has provided KVOFD with sanitary napkins that are to be availed by those girls whose family cannot afford it. It is our firm belief that girls can take our country and society forward when they are not bound by societal norms or discrimination. The Million Daughters Foundation attempts to fight against period poverty to provide young girls of the country a chance to complete their education, giving their dreams and aspirations new wings.
